1. YOU'LL GET GOLD FEVER with special adventures from Gray Line
of Alaska!
In Fairbanks, visit Gold Dredge #8. You'll catch Gold Fever here
hat's
for sure. First, tho', you get a
guided tour through the giant gold dredge
and learn about the incredible process
used to extract gold from the
"paydirt", including
high-pressure "ydraulic giants" and the huge amounts
of electricity used to power these machines. There are special
displays in
several of the old mine cabins documenting the history of the
dredge and
its operators. http://www.asme.org/history/roster/H113.html
For tour
information, call Gray Line of Alaska: (907) 277-5581 or
visit the
website: http://www.graylineofalaska.com/tour_detail.cfm?tour_id=14

2.WE LOVE DAWSON CITY
eart of the Klondike! http://www.dawsoncity.org
Head north from Tok across the Top of the World Highway until
you hit the
Yukon River. From there, a free Canadian Ferry will take you
across the
river to Dawson City, eh! This is a fun town filled
with excitement,
history and plenty of great activities. Stop at the Visitors
"Centre" and
pick up some free information, including festivities for Dawson's
Centennial Year! Make plans in advance to take the Yukon Queen
II, which
sails 100 miles from Dawson City to Eagle. This is some of
the most scenic
country on the river. You'll see wildlife and incredible geology
as the
river cuts a dramatic swath through the countryside. Lunch
is served on
board. After a tour of Eagle, you return to Dawson City in
time to catch
the Musical Revue at Diamond Tooth Gertie, the town's casino
and lounge.
Watch the Can-Can girls high-kick
their way through some old-time
slapstick. Great fun, eh?
Be sure and make time to visit the
Dawson City Museum, which chronicles
the incredible development of Dawson from a sleepy fishing
village to
"Paris of the North" where thousands of people flocked
in search of Gold!
This is where Robert Service worked while writing his poetry.
In fact, Tom
Byrne does a great job of reciting Service poetry at his shop
on Front
Street. Best latte? RiverWest on Front
Street. Best internet caf? The
Grubstake. Most Creative Cocktail?
The Downtown Hotel "Sour Toe
Cocktail" where you take a shot
with a REAL DEAD TOE in the bottom of the
glass. NO! I didn't
drink it, but Girdwood Chiropractor Rosemary Zimmerman
did. I took a picture. "It was
weird," she said. Really, now? "It was
kinda squishy." Y-E-E-C-C-C-H-H!
Best currency exchange? At Diamond Tooth
Gertie, where they're
offering 1.50-to-1.0. In other words, if you give
the cashier $10US, you receive $15
in Canadian funds. WOW! Another
Molson please.
Peter and Karen Jenkins are the "Hosts
with the Most" at Dawson El
Dorado Hotel http://www.eldoradohotel.ca.
Peter is one of those
make-it-happen fellows. Peter and
Security Aviation owner Mike O'
eill
helped organize the 10th Annual Dawson
City Fly-In for the Alaska Airmen.
Pilots and enthusiasts from all over
Alaska mark "DAWSON" on the schedule
each year. Tell 'em Scott sent you when you head for DAWSON
CITY!

3. DENALI WILDERNESS LODGE
Summer Camp for grown-ups!
http://www.denaliwildernesslodge.com/
What a magical place! From
horseback rides to guided nature walks to evening campfires
complete with
hot dogs and marshmallows! Of course
you can bring the kids along, but
they're be busy throwing rocks in the
river, playing ping-pong or feeding
the horses.
How do you get there? Drive north from Denali Park to Healy and
catch a
short flight across the mountains. The lodge originally was
built as a
fly-in hunting camp. Now, naturalists guide you through the
forests and
mountains hunting for new varieties of Alaskan orchids, or a
great vantage
point to see eagles, sheep, even a bear or two while you take in
the
spectacular scenery.
BE PREPARED for a struggle when you tell the kids it's time to
go! Did I
talk about the food? Heyet great and THREE meals per day
are included
in the "Alaskan Special", along with accommodations
and all guided
activities!
ALASKAN SPECIAL: $129 per person per night for Alaska residents
and their
friends (SOMEBODY has to have an Alaskan Driver's License number
to
qualify for the deal!). AIR FARE is not included from Healy to
the lodge.
