Dear Customers,
Thank you for your inquiry about my wilderness trips.
I offer everything from day trips to extended expeditions,
wilderness travel to guiding instruction.
The following is my email brochure. It contains current pricing
and adds some information not recited on the web page. If you
have not already done so please visit my web page at the address
shown below. Did you first find us on the web or from another
source?
All of my trips are open dated. I'll do any trip anytime during
the season. The season in Alaska is basically Memorial Day
(last weekend of May) to Labor Day (first weekend of September),
with the possibility of a couple of weeks variation outside that
range. I'll organize trips to other places, using folding
kayaks, for other times of the year if you wish.
Trip prices per person are shown in the information below. If
you commit to trip dates with a deposit and will allow others to
join you, then your price will be adjusted downward if others
join your trip. You may also be able to join another committed
tour if you can adjust your travel dates as tours begin to
solidify. Once you have confirmed a trip that suits your date
needs it is usual that others will wish to join those dates.
For our Fully Outfitted tours, all kayaking, camping gear and
food is included, except for your personal equipment, i.e.
sleeping bag and pad, clothing... We also offer a Guided Rental
pricing structure for people who have their own camping and
cooking gear and do their own meals. Guiding and instruction are
provided. The only additional expenses are for any
transportation or lodging required before, during or after your
trip.
New! Inland Adventures. These three road trips are the van
camping trips we usually take our families on when they visit!
Check them out in the materials below.
Also New! Bear Glacier fly-in including flight seeing the
Harding Ice Field plus kayaking for a day or longer.
Thank you for your inquiry.
I hope to arrange a trip for you!
Best Regards,
Jim Vermillion

Family Tour Considerations
I welcome families on our sea kayaking adventures. Due to the
nature of group kayaking, we have established a minimum age of
16, with the accompaniment of a guardian. We reserve the right
to restrict children to the use of a double kayak with an adult.
We encourage families with younger children to join us on a
custom tour. The age limit for a custom trip will depend on the
individual situation.
Age of Children
In order for us to successfully provide a Family Tour, we must
take into consideration how each family member adds to and
changes the overall dynamics of the entire group. When combining
families the same considerations apply. Please see our Adult to
Child Ratio below.
Adult to Child Ratio
This is not so much a "comfort" consideration as it is a safety
consideration. Keep in mind that kayaks are designed for
adults, we must be sure to have one adult in each kayak. It
does not matter how well behaved or athletic your child is.
Adult to Child Ratio
Age 6-8 2 Adults per child
Age 9-12 1 Adult per child
Age 13-16 1 Adult per 2 children
We do not normally include our guide into this ratio, but may
consider it based on overall group dynamics.
If you do not have enough adults to meet our ratios a
supplemental person can join the tour for an additional fee, or
you may be able to combine your trip with another family tour.
Custom day trips for families and special groups are available
by advance reservation. A custom Full Day Trip is $395.00 plus
tax, partial day trips are $245.00 plus tax. The custom day
trip price from Seward includes three participants. Additional
participants are at the regular price per person.

Descriptions for popular kayaking destinations

The Bear Glacier
Protected by its terminal moraine from the Gulf of Alaska it
sits nestled along the north side of the Aialik Peninsula. In
front of the Bear Glacier lies a wonderfully protected and
iceberg filled lake sliding back up the long valley to it's
northwest. Wolverine and Bear find sanctuary here, away from
the noise and intrusion of power boat visitors. Seabirds,
shorebirds and inland water fowl intermingle in it's protected
waters. Mountains surround the Bear Glacier on three sides as
it issues from the Harding Ice Field, while it's face is shown
to the ocean. It's a beautiful place to sea kayak and to camp.
It offers exquisite seclusion and outstanding scenery.
We can take you to the Bear Glacier for a day or longer. Longer
is better.
We begin our trip by seaplane, flying from near Seward. Enroute
you view the spectacular Harding Ice Field then gain an aerial
perspective of the Bear Glacier and the Aialik Peninsula. After
picking an area safely free of icebergs we land in front of the
glacier and taxi to shore where our kayaks are stored waiting
our arrival.
On our day trip we paddle out to view the glacier and icebergs,
stopping for lunch and a hike up to the glacier. After lunch we
continue exploring for wildlife and add more spectacular
photographs to our collections. Returning in the afternoon we
cache the kayaks and board the sea plane for our scenic flight
back to Seward.
Those staying for an overnight or longer continue up the lake
after lunch and make camp on one of the remote beaches. There
we listen to the sounds of bergy bits cracking and popping as
they release compressed air from thousands of years past. A
delicious camp cooked meal is shared before turning into our
tents for the night. Mornings are great for photography with
the long lasting low light at this latitude. Even if you don't
get up right at the crack of dawn (which is about the time you
went to bed!) you will still be in time for great views and
photos. We will continue to camp and paddle as we explore the
area by water and by hiking until, reluctantly we return to fly
back to Seward the afternoon of our last day at Bear Glacier.
Join us on this unique trip.
The Bear Glacier trip, there are less expensive trips, but none
will come close to the combination of experiences and sights
that are included here. One of my clients last year, a South
African lady remarked after her flight that she had never before
seen such beauty, she had "Seen the hand of God"... The lessor
trips can take you by power boat, along with many other people,
into and back from the Fjords in a day. However, if you want a
truly great trip then the Bear Glacier trip would be the one to
choose.
Suitable for younger paddlers and families. This is a well
protected paddling area, without ocean swells and waves.
Trip Cost, includes all meals and transfers from Seward, Alaska.
Two person minimum.
One day: $459 per person
Overnight: $595 per person

Six Glacial Adventures in Alaska, and one that
isn't.....
Kenai Fjords
Choose Aialik Bay, Northwestern Fjord or Nuka Bay. Travel from
Seward in a chartered boat along the rugged coastline and in two
hours you'll see the towering glaciers of Aialik Bay. Just two
more hours and you can be within reach of Northwestern Glacier.
Continue onward to find yourself in the most isolated area of
the park, Nuka Island and McCarty Fjord.
All three areas are spectacular for kayaking. Aialik features
three tidal glaciers, one within a lagoon teaming with
wildlife. Northwestern abounds with four tidal glaciers, two
grounded for access to glacier hiking. This area is known for a
large local population of harbor seals and sea otters. Nuka Bay
offers spectacular islets and coves, a dramatic coastline
leading to the face of a huge tidal glacier and to top it off,
excellent fishing.
Prince William Sound
Choose Harriman Fjord, Nellie Juan Glacier, Knight Island or
Whale Bay. Departing from Whittier in a chartered boat both
Harriman and Nellie Juan are less than one hour away. Knight
Island and Whale Bay are farther out from Whittier, about a four
hour ride to each.
The Harriman adventure begins with a serene paddle around
Harriman lagoon and continues into the outstretched fjord with
four huge tidal glaciers hosting unique northern wildlife. The
Nellie Juan tour begins from an island, includes a channel
crossing, then travels along a coastline dotted with coastal
islands. The tidal glacier and spectacular lagoon at the end of
this trip and the terrific hiking opportunity up to the glacier
make this a wonderful adventure. Knight Island features
spectacular coves and inlets, especially the steep walls of
Copper Cove. Orcas and seals cruise this area. Whale Bay takes
you to an open area where whales abound. The Chenega Glacier
area in Whale Bay offers the experience of watching a population
of harbor seals float in and out on the icebergs calved by the
tidal glacier.
